Luther Hughes

Luther Hughes is a distinguished bassist with a career spanning over five decades. He began his musical journey at Long Beach City College, earning his A.A. degree, followed by a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Long Beach. As a musician and band leader, Luther heads the acclaimed Luther Hughes & The Cannonball-Coltrane Project, captivating audiences with his powerful performances.


In addition to his work as a performer, Luther is the President of Primrose Lane Music, a record label and music publishing company he founded in 2004. His contributions to the jazz world extend into education, where he has been a dedicated instructor at Cal State University Fullerton for nearly 30 years.


Throughout his illustrious career, Luther has played bass alongside some of the biggest names in jazz, including Gene Harris, Carmen McRae, Horace Silver, James Moody, Joe Pass, Louis Bellson, Hampton Hawes, Nancy Wilson, and The Crusaders. His talents have also been showcased on television, with appearances as a band member on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Boston Legal."


Luther’s voice has reached audiences through the airwaves as well, having hosted the radio programs "Lunch with Luther" and "Jazz Today" on KKJZ FM 88.1 in Long Beach, California.
