Albert Einstein is 12 years old and preparing for the most important, nerve-wracking event of his young life: his violin recital. Anxious, running behind, and brimming with ideas he doesn’t fully understand, Albert and his faithful companion The
Cat race through his big day with hopes of impressing the girl (Elsa), dodging the brat (Constantine), and winning over his hard-to-please maestro (Herr Schloppnoppdinkerdonn). Desperate to “get everything right”, Albert’s exuberant musical journey brings him closer to the Universe …and to more than a few universal truths about growing up… than ever before.
Originally commissioned by the Alliance Theater in Atlanta, this one-act musical has had productions around the country. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said: “Young Einstein’s geeky streak is reason to rock … Einstein abounds with the energy of its subject matter … The verdict: sheer energy, musicalized.” —
Albert: Actor (20s) Sweet, off beat character, all types welcome. A big dreamer with math, science, music, (and maybe even rock-stardom) in his head. Creative, sincere, curious, often clumsy, and occasionally awkward. Desperate to not be “different”, which for Albert is much easier said than done. Plays the violin in his music class (actual playing ability not required).
Voice: Bari-Tenor Low Bb to High G
The Cat: Actor/Actress (20s) All types welcome. Einstein’s stray sidekick and extension of Albert’s inner voice. Mischievous, nimble, intelligent, witty. The faithful companion who believes in (and understands) Albert more than anyone.
Male Voice: Bari-Tenor Low Bb to High F, with Falsetto
Female Voice: Alto – Low G to High E
Elsa: Actress (20s) Einstein’s crush. Plays viola in Einstein’s music class (actual playing ability not required). Uniquely pretty, bright, playful, empathetic, perceptive, courageous, and without a self-conscious bone in her body. Even better than the girl next door.
Voice: Mezzo Low A to High F#
Constantine: Actor (20s) The bratty cello player in Einstein’s trio (actual playing ability not required). Staggeringly pleased with himself (and his bow-tie), ostentatious, entitled and spoiled.
Voice: Tenor C to High A, with Falsetto
Herr Schloppnoppdinkerdonn: Male, character, mid years. The kids’ music teacher and task master. Worships order over chaos. Authoritative but easily flustered, and amusingly oblivious to the needs of his students. Unswayed by new ideas, and a momma’s boy at heart. German accent.
Voice: Baritone Low Bb to E
